TJC's Alpha Omicron chapter of Phi Theta Kappa is one of the oldest PTK chapters in the nation, chartered since 1930.
Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society
We are the Alpha Omicron Chapter of Phi Theta Kappa.
We are an active, enthusiastic group that strives to live up to the four hallmarks of our organization: scholarship, leadership, service and fellowship. We are proud of the outstanding Phi Theta Kappans, both across the nation and on this campus, who have distinguished themselves in all four hallmarks.
We are also proud of the many regional, national and international awards our own chapter has won and the thousands of dollars individual chapter members have amassed in scholarships and awards.
Our chapter values its reputation for service and leadership here at TJC. We work hard, but we have fun, too. We want you to share in the joys of being a Phi Theta Kappan!

What is Phi Theta Kappa?
Phi Theta Kappa was established in 1918 and is recognized by the American Association of Community and Junior Colleges as the official honor fraternity for two-year colleges. Phi Theta Kappa is the only nationally acclaimed honor fraternity serving American institutions offering associate degree programs.
Membership in Phi Theta Kappa has long been considered by two-year and four-year colleges as a signal honor accorded only those students of outstanding achievement. 91% of Phi Theta Kappans complete their associate's degree and/or transfer to a four-year college, while 68% complete a bachelor's degree or higher.
History
Chartered in 1930, Alpha Omicron is one of the nation's oldest Phi Theta Kappa chapters. Charted in Nov. 1930, it began competing for regional and international awards in 1985 when the chapter joined the Texas regional organization.
Alpha Omicron was the 40th chapter chartered in the U.S. and is one of the largest chapters in the state and in the nation. There are more than 1,100 chapters internationally.
Achievements
The Alpha Omicron chapter and its members are regularly awarded honors for their outstanding accomplishments. See some of our latest achievements here.
What our Members Say
I never fail to express to any faculty, advisors and mentor that I cannot imagine what my college experience would be without TJC. My involvement on campus and the connections I have made within the past two years have helped me lay a foundation for the rest of my life.
DeShona Jernigan
Jack Kent Cooke Scholarship semi-finalist, Watson W. Wise Incentive award winner
As a first-generation college student, TJC has been important in finding my way in higher education. Before I came here, I wasn't sure how to become the person I wanted to be. Now, I have a plan and a family on campus to push me to accomplish what I set out to do.

Hites Transfer Scholar, Coca-Cola Gold Scholar
PTK & CC Smart
America believes in a few things about community colleges. Most people know they are less expensive. This year, the average annual cost of tuition and required fees at a community college is $3,860, a full 60% less than a four-year public university which averages $10,940. People also know community colleges are accessible. They are around when you need them and have flexible offerings for the first two years of a four-year degree. They also provide workforce programs and training designed to help students get good jobs as quickly as possible. What the public doesn’t know as much about is the quality of community colleges. That is what CCsmart, or Community College Smart, is all about.
CCsmart is an anti-stigma advocacy campaign devoted to changing the conversation about the work of community colleges. The campaign promotes student-led advocacy for community colleges and provides robust and reliable information through its online communications hub CCsmart.org.
