A Career You Can Take Anywhere
The Automotive Technology program at TJC will prepare you to enter an engaging, hands-on career in a high-demand profession.
Automotive Technology
The work of automotive technicians has evolved dramatically during the past two decades. You'll learn to troubleshoot, diagnose, identify parts, repair components, and service vehicles equipped with hybrid drivetrains, active suspensions, satellite guidance systems and computer controlled engines, multi-speed automatic transmissions, 4-wheel drive systems.
We've designed the automotive laboratory at TJC West to operate similarly to an actual automotive repair business. You'll hone your skills as a valuable team member while working on a fleet of 40 late model vehicles, including eight hybrids and three diesels. Students are encouraged to work on their own vehicles as well.
Job opportunities are very good as some employers report difficulty finding workers with the right skills and education, especially in alternative fuel or computer systems. Twelve automotive shops in Tyler – including all dealerships – seek out technicians from the TJC Automotive Technology program.
Technicians are needed everywhere, so you can choose where you want to live and work. Earnings locally range from $19,100 to $58,500 annually and are higher in other parts of the country.
By majoring in Automotive Technology – or our variety of certificate programs – you'll have a valuable skill that you can take with you anywhere in the world.
