TEAS/HESI for Respiratory Care

HESI for Respiratory Care

All Respiratory Care applicants must take the HESI A2 Admissions Assessment exam, administered in the Testing Services Department located on the 2nd floor of the Rogers Student Center on the TJC Central campus, or TJC West, for a fee of $79.00. Applicants should only attempt the exam when best prepared to score as high as possible.

An applicant must take the following HESI subtests:

  1. Math
  2. Reading
  3. Vocabulary and General Knowledge
  4. Anatomy and Physiology
  5. Grammar
  6. Learning Style (not included in points)
  7. Personality Profile (not included in points)

Steps an applicant must complete to take the HESI A2 exam: 

  • Set up a HESI account by going to https://evolve.elsevier.com. Click on the Login link and then click on the Create Account link. Make sure to write down the user id and password you created as this information will be required on the test day. 
  • You must have an appointment to take the exam. You can schedule an appointment at tjctesting.setmore.com. Please note some firewalls may block directly linking to this site. If this happens to you, please open a browser and type in "TJCTesting.Setmore.com" and link to our booking page through this alternative option. You may take your HESI exam at the Main Campus testing center located in the Rogers Student Center or at the testing center located at TJC West. You must be at the testing facility and ready to test at your assigned time. If there are scheduling issues, please call the testing center, Main Campus: (903) 510-2617 or TJC West at (903) 510-2993. If no appointments are available, you can arrive early any weekday and check in to take the exam on a first come, first served basis if seats open up due to cancellations or no shows.
  • When you arrive for testing, you must pay a $79 testing fee. Payment can be made at the Testing Center. Testing Services will accept checks, credit cards, money orders, or cash payments. Along with the receipt of the test fee payment, you will need to present a valid photo ID, such as a driver’s license, military ID, passport, concealed handgun license, or TJC Student ID. 
  • On the test day, ensure you have your HESI Account User ID (Evolve account) and Password (see step 1 for details). 

What is the HESI A2 Admissions Assessment Exam?

The HESI A2 Admissions Assessment exam is a comprehensive test that evaluates the academic and social skills of new applicants to the Radiologic Technology program. A brief explanation of each subtest follows:

  • Math: Focuses on math skills for health care fields, including basic addition, subtraction, multiplication, fractions, decimals, ratio and proportions, household measures, and general math facts.
  • Reading: Provides reading scenarios over medical topics to measure reading comprehension, identifying the main idea, finding the meaning of words in context, passage comprehension, and making logical inferences.
  • Vocabulary/General Knowledge: Contains vocabulary terms that are used commonly in both general English speaking and in the health care fields.
  • Anatomy and Physiology: Provides coverage of general terminology and anatomical structures and systems. 
  • Grammar: Contains basic grammar, including parts of speech, important terms and their uses in grammar, commonly occurring grammatical errors, etc.
  • Learning Style: Assesses the preferred learning style of the prospective applicant and offers test-taking and study tips suited to that learning style
  • Personality Profile: Uses concepts related to introversion and extroversion to classify the student’s personality style.

How much does the HESI A2 Admissions Assessment exam cost and what do I need to take the exam?

The cost of the exam is $79.00 for Tyler Junior College students. The student must pay for the exam and present a receipt to complete the exam. Payment can be made at the Testing Center. The Testing Center will accept checks, credit cards, money orders, or cash payments. Along with receipt of payment, the student will need to present a photo ID. Calculators may be used during the exam and are provided by the Testing Center.

Can a Student Retest?

The HESI A2 Admissions Assessment exam may only be taken twice per application period to achieve a better score. Students must wait at least 6 months to after the first attempt before the second attempt.

Is There a Study Guide?

A study guide can be purchased at through Elsevier at the following link or at various bookstores, "Admissions Assessment Exam Review".


TEAS for Respiratory Care
Note: TEAS will only be accepted for the Spring 2025 application period.

As a Registered Respiratory Therapist, you are a critical member of the healthcare team licensed by the Texas Medical Board to perform advanced life-saving procedures. You can expect outstanding compensation and benefits while advancing professionally. 

Our Respiratory Care program is a two-year curriculum that includes one semester of prerequisite courses and four semesters of lecture, laboratory, and clinical classes that prepare the student for a career as a respiratory therapist.

Are you qualified to take the TEAS for Respiratory Care?

In order to take the ATI TEAS and be eligible for application to the Respiratory Care Program, applicants must have completed a core MATH class, ENGL 1301, BIOL 2401, and CHEM 1406 with a grade of C or better. BIOL 2401 must have been completed within the last 5 years.* Also, it is strongly recommended you visit with a TJC Healthcare Advisor in the Rogers Student Center before taking your TEAS exam.

Steps to Registering for the TEAS Exam: 

1. Create a student account with ATI at www.atitesting.com

  • Click “create account” which is found on the right side of the home screen. 
  • Select “Tyler JC AH or Allied Health” from the Institutions drop-down menu. 
  • Create your username and password. 
  • Keep this login information in a safe place; as this information will be required on the day of the test. 

2. To make an appointment with the Testing Center, please go to tjctesting.setmore.com. (Please note some firewalls may block directly linking to this site. If this happens to you, please open a browser and type in "TJCTesting.Setmore.com" and link to our booking page through this alternative option)

3. When you arrive for your appointment, you need to pay a $25.00 proctoring fee. Payment can be made at the Testing Center. The Testing Center will accept checks, credit cards, money orders, or cash payments. Make sure you have the following items at your appointment:

  • ATI Username and Password 
  • Appointment Confirmation Email 
  • Proctor fee receipt 
  • Valid photo ID 

4. Once you are logged in to your ATI account and the proctor has entered in the password code, you will be required to make an online payment of $74.62 (taxes included) to ATI. 

NOTE: This will require a credit card or gift card. No debit cards allowed. You need to pay before proceeding with the exam. 

5. The TEAS takes 3.5 hours to complete. Due to the length of the exam, we will not start a new TEAS exam within 4 hours of closing. For closing hours, you can visit www.tjc.edu/testing.

ATI TEAS Exam Requirements 

The ATI TEAS is a standardized test covering a variety of areas relevant to healthcare education, including reading, mathematics, science, English and language usage. 
Your ATI TEAS exam score must meet the following requirements: 
•    You must score a minimum of 50% or better on the Total Score
•    You must score a minimum of 60% or better on the Reading Section
•    You must score a minimum of 50% or better on the Human Body Science Section
•    ATI TEAS must be completed within the two years prior to the application deadline
•    An applicant may take the TEAS a maximum of two times in a single application period.
•    If the applicant chooses to retake the TEAS, they must retake ALL sections.  Failure to complete all sections on the retake will result in an exam attempt being invalid.
