Ability To Benefit Exam (ATB) – Federal Financial Aid Availability
Federal student aid “ability to benefit” eligibility option is available for only TJC students without a high school diploma or Texas Certificate of High School Eligibility (TxCHSE) who:
1. Pass an approved Ability to Benefit (ATB) exam
AND
2. Enroll in an approved career pathway program consisting of:
- A postsecondary career program eligible for federal student aid
Students who wish to take advantage of the Ability to Benefit (ATB) opportunity for federal student aid eligibility will need to complete these steps:
- Apply and be accepted to TJC
- Complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA)
- Please also visit our Financial Aid Office in the White Administration Building for eligibility or call them at 903-510-2385
- Complete the Accuplacer TSIA exam at the TJC Testing Center in the Rogers Student Center
- By appointment only, complete and pass the Ability To Benefit (ATB) exam at the TJC Testing Center in the Rogers Student Center or TJC West
- No fees charged for TJC Students
- Passing Scores Are As Follows:
- Reading – 233 or higher
- Writing – 235 or higher
- Math – 230 or higher
- The exam total time will take 2 to 4 hours to complete

- Upon successful completion of the ATB exam, ensure you are in one of the eligible majors by confirming with our Financial Aid Department
- Register into classes within an approved major through your Academic Advisor or program registration contact
