TJC graduates ready to enter high-tech careers

As the technology field continues to grow in size and complexity, so does the constant demand for highly trained experts.

This week, three Tyler Junior College students will earn their Associate of Applied Science degrees in network technology and step into successful futures in the high-tech field.

After graduation, Sam Harrison will begin his career as a telecommunications engineering designer in the Tyler area, while also working on an accelerated bachelor’s/master’s degree program at Western Governor’s University.

“The professors were reasonable and understanding while maintaining a rigorous curriculum,” he said of his TJC experience. “They wanted every student to actually learn and understand the material. They always happily gave advice, help and connections to the workforce.”

As a first-generation college student, Harrison added, “TJC was very flexible with scheduling classes, gave many opportunities for financial assistance/relief, and provided a wide array of resources.”

Joseph Packard, of Tyler, is also a first-generation student.

“The advising and financial aid departments were incredibly helpful in guiding my family through something we have not done before,” he said. “It was an easy and smooth process with no stress.”

Packard said he originally chose TJC because it was close to home, “but down the line, I realized that this was not just the only option for my needs, but the best option due to the quality and excellence demonstrated by TJC.”

He currently works as a telecommunications and software engineer at TechServ Engineering and Consulting in Tyler, with aspirations to eventually move into a leadership role, leading a software development project/team.

He added, “I’ve met so many who have demonstrated diligence in their work and their willingness to ensure their students achieve. Prof. Christopher Shaw has guided me through the professional side of my career path and how I can apply my major to my career. I admire the charisma Prof. Robert Anderson displayed every class period, it was surely the highlight of each day; and Prof. Seth Norman was patient and very knowledgeable with his line of work.”

Morgan Coughlan, of Grand Saline, said, “I chose TJC because it was close to home and the schedule was forgiving for a young mom trying to return to school to better mine and my family’s future.”

After TJC, Coughlan plans to pursue her bachelor’s degree at Western Governor’s University and eventually become a video game designer or instructor.

“I am truly grateful to the professors for how they pushed me and supported me to get through this program and to better myself for my family,” she said. “TJC has opened many doors for me, both personally and mentally. I am proud to have known everyone that I have met during this journey. TJC has given me a sense of pride in myself I didn't know I could have.”

Coughlan’s advice to current and future students: “Don’t stop. Sometimes the hardest things become the most worth it in the end.”

About the TJC program
The TJC Network Technology program enables students to design and implement a variety of computer and information networks.

Additionally, these skills will allow them to maximize reliability and quality of service on existing or new networks, as well as improve network security and provide a range of application-oriented solutions.
