Hiring Process
After your application is submitted, the Director will verify you meet the minimum requirements and look for commonly requested courses you have completed with an ‘A’. The more commonly requested courses you have completed will elevate your chances of hire. Once the Director has reviewed the application and has chosen you as a candidate, you will receive an invitation to an interview.
If chosen for the position, you will be required to attend New Tutor Training. During new tutor training, you will learn how to successfully conduct a tutoring session and learn about the policies and procedures of Tutoring Services.

Responsibilities
An Apache Tutoring peer tutor is a student assistant temporary position responsible to the Director of Tutoring Services.
- Tutor students during one-to-one appointments on campus and online to identify and address understanding subject content and writing concerns
- Guide and support students toward independent learning by suggesting and modeling study skills and proper practices for college success
- Keep precise records of student visits/no-shows and personal work timesheet
- Ask open-ended, probing questions to promote students’ active involvement and to assess knowledge and retention
- Maintain confidentiality
- Help maintain noise level at an appropriate indoor volume and cleanliness of the center
- Assist with workshops when asked
- Work as a team with professional and peer tutors to help and support each other
- Attend meetings
- Reflect and improve upon tutoring techniques by researching tutoring methods during downtime
- Report problems to Director, Front Desk Staff, and Specialist, as well as on tutor reports
- Ensure that the center continues to function as a safe learning space for students
- Perform related duties as assigned
- Follow all policies and procedures established by Apache Tutoring
Initial Qualifications:
- High school diploma or GED
- Enrolled at TJC for at least 6 hours
- Minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0
- Completion of one semester of college coursework is required
- Excellent verbal, written, and interpersonal communication skills
Qualifications for Subject Content Tutoring
- All of the above Initial Qualifications
- Have received Grade “A” in the course you wish to tutor
- Preference given to students qualified to tutor in core curriculum courses and high in-demand courses
Qualifications for Writing Assistance in any Course
- All of the above Initial Qualifications
- Have received Grade “A” in English 1301 and English 1302
Requirements
- Must obtain a teacher's letter of recommendation
- Must commit to a 10-18 hour weekly work schedule
- Must be able to work on campus
