Tyler Junior College proudly announces the appointment of Happi Deason Byrne as the new director of the Apache Belles, TJC’s renowned precision dance team.
She will begin her new position in January.
Byrne, a member of the 46th Apache Belle line, brings a wealth of experience and passion to the role, ensuring the continued excellence and tradition of the Apache Belles.
A well-known figure in the Tyler area, Byrne has over 25 years of experience in education. She has worked with the Apache Belles for many years as a volunteer, serving as an interview judge and a mentor. She implemented and organized the “Welcome Home” for the Apache Belles and their families, and she has served as the coordinator lead for the Apache Belle Gold program. Her leadership and administrative background will provide the Apache Belles with fresh perspectives and inspiring opportunities as they continue to showcase their talent on and off the field.
“I am honored and thrilled to take on the role of director for the Apache Belles,” Byrne said. “The Apache Belles have a rich history of excellence, and I look forward to working with these talented young women to continue that tradition while inspiring them to grow as dancers, leaders and individuals.”
Byrne’s appointment comes at a time of growth for TJC’s performing arts programs. As the Apache Belles continue to perform at football games, parades, competitions and special events, Byrne’s leadership is expected to elevate the team’s performances to new heights.

The ideal candidate would provide oversight, management and leadership to the Apache Belle program, as well as set a strategic vision for the future. Happi certainly proved to us that she has a clear vision for the future direction of the Apache Belles. Her dedication to bringing people together for common goals, her administrative background and commitment to fostering student development make her an outstanding choice to lead the Apache Belles into the future.”
The institutional selection process included a broad-based committee representing numerous stakeholders, all committed to making the best decision for this very important organization to the College.
Byrne’s credentials include a bachelor’s degree in kinesiology and a minor in dance from Stephen F. Austin State University and a master’s degree in sports administration from Arkansas State University.
The TJC Apache Belles have been entertaining audiences from the football field to the performance stage since 1947 with their precision dance and head-turning production numbers. For over 75 years, the trademark precision dance, cutting-edge routines and, of course, the famous Apache Belle “high kick” have thrilled fans around the globe.
The Apache Belles have graced the halftime field for two Super Bowls, numerous Dallas Cowboys games, Houston Oilers, San Antonio Spurs, Dallas Mavericks, and Texas Rangers games.
They have traveled the world to Mexico, France, Ireland, China, Austria and Germany to perform at parades, celebrations and balls for dignitaries, special guests and, of course, for the military men and women of the great United States of America.
The Apache Belles have been the subject of numerous media publications appearing in Southern Living, Woman’s Day, Texas Outlook, Texas Parade, Dance and Drill Magazine, Venture Magazine, and many more. They have met and entertained such celebrities and dignitaries as Former President Ronald Reagan, Former President George H.W. and Barbara Bush, Former President Bill and Hillary Clinton and Governors Ann Richards and George W. Bush.
