TJC’s Family Learning Center of Tyler held an appreciation luncheon for its community partners – Tyler ISD and Literacy Council of Tyler – last week at the center.
The center is located on the campus of Douglas Elementary School.
“For 10 years, the Family Learning Center has been a part of the East Texas education community, and that is due in no small part to our strong relationships with Tyler ISD and Literacy Council of Tyler,” said Carrol McGlaun, center director.
The Family Learning Center of Tyler was established in 2007 as a collaborative project of the Literacy Council of Tyler, Tyler ISD and TJC. The center provides adult education for ESL and GED preparation, and it supports families with the transition from childcare to public education.
It also serves as the TJC Child Development/Early Childhood Laboratory School for college students preparing for careers in early childhood professions. Instructors at the center have an associate’s degree in early childhood or a related field or are pursuing a degree. Support staff members have also completed course work in child development/early childhood.
In August 2015, the center received accreditation by the National Accreditation Commission for Early Care and Education Programs.
10-year anniversary celebration set April 20
On April 20, the center will celebrate its 10th anniversary with a family picnic.
“We’ve invited our alumni and former directors to help us celebrate,” said Lynn Sitton, TJC childhood development/early childhood department director. Sitton is a former director of the center. “It will be a great event.”
