TJC band, choirs combine for 90th Anniversary Musical Extravaganza

For one night only, the Tyler Junior College Wind Ensemble, Chamber Singers and Concert Choir will join forces for TJC’s 90th Anniversary Musical Extravaganza.

The performance will be 7:30 p.m. Thursday, April 27, in Wise Auditorium on the TJC main campus. Admission is free, and the public is invited to attend.

“Our music programs are absolutely second to none,” said Jeanie Oxler, TJC music department chair. “This performance will dazzle and delight everyone as we showcase the best of what our students have to offer.”

The program will include an Armed Forces salute, as well as a special arrangement of songs associated with TJC by Micah Bell, TJC trumpet professor.

The Chamber Singers will be under the direction of student conductor Trey Andrews.

Andrews is a sophomore music/voice major from Canyon. He was chosen as a guest conductor because of his interest in studying choral conducting. After graduating from TJC, he plans to transfer to West Texas A&M.

The Concert Choir will be under the direction of guest conductor, Dr. Cheryl Rogers.

Rogers served as TJC director of choral activities from 1992 to 2007 and served as music department chair from 1987 to 2007. Since 2007, she has served as TJC executive director of institutional effectiveness, planning and research.

The TJC Wind Ensemble and combined choirs will be under the direction of Jeremy Strickland, TJC director of bands.

Oxler added, “Alumni and friends of our music programs are especially invited to attend and reminisce on their time at TJC. It’s going to be a wonderful evening.”

The performance is part of TJC’s annual Arts Festival, a month-long celebration of exhibits and performances by TJC students, faculty and staff. For a complete list of events, go to www.tjc.edu/ArtsFestival.
