The TJC Occupational Therapy Assistant program has received full accreditation by the Accreditation Council for Occupational Therapy Education of the American Occupational Therapy Association.
“Our OTA program has been a great addition to our health sciences offerings at TJC, and it’s the result of a lot of hard work by our dedicated faculty and staff,” said Paul Monagan, dean of the TJC School of Nursing and Health Sciences.
“Thanks to their diligence in creating and maintaining this program, we have a strong pool of applicants, a robust curriculum and our graduates have excellent opportunities to enter the job market and/or continue their education.”
Occupational therapy assistants work with licensed occupational therapists to provide care and treatment to help people participate more fully in everyday life.
They help individuals develop, recover and improve the skills needed for daily living and working. They work with in a variety of settings, including hospitals, clinics, schools and nursing homes, as well as in the patients’ homes, places of employment and other community settings.
The TJC Occupational Therapy Assistant program provides students with four semesters of classroom and laboratory learning, followed by one semester of full-time fieldwork under the supervision of a registered occupational therapist or a certified occupational therapy assistant, leading to an Associate of Applied Science degree.
After successfully completing the program, OTA students can take the national exam given by the National Board for Certification in Occupational to become a certified occupational therapy assistant.
The average annual salary for occupational therapy assistants is $54,520, and job outlook is expected to grow by 40 percent over the next 10 years.
