Visitors to the Center for Earth & Space Science Education at TJC are invited to look beneath the surface in their new, ocean-themed exhibit and dome show.
‘Oceans: Acid vs. Life’
Become immersed in marine life and how coral reefs grow and thrive in “Oceans: Acid vs. Life,” the new exhibit opening Friday. Admission is included in the price of a show ticket or $3 for the exhibit only.
Ocean acidification has been described as potentially the greatest environmental threat, yet few have heard of it. Studies show that oceans have experienced a 30-percent rise in acidity in recent years, and its impact is said to have changed fish behavior, making them more vulnerable to predation and affecting the biodiversity of the coral reefs, upsetting the ecological balance of the seas.
Science center visitors can learn more about this scientific study through our exhibit of seven, interactive video stations. Energetic young explorers can crawl through a life-size replica of a coral reef.
A display of shells offers a new perspective on the diversity of reefs in displays of shells; and visitors can more closely examine coral, sponges and other marine life under a microscope.
‘Wild Ocean’
“Wild Ocean,” the science center’s newest dome show, opens Tuesday, Sept. 13, and runs 3 p.m. Tuesdays-Saturdays. The 45-minute film plunges the audience into an underwater feeding frenzy, an epic struggle for survival where whales, sharks, dolphins, seals, gannets and billions of fish collide with mankind during one of nature’s greatest migration spectacles.
Filmed off the Wild Coast of South Africa and set to the rhythm of the local people, “Wild Ocean” reveals the economic and cultural impact of the ocean while celebrating the communal efforts to protect the earth’s invaluable marine resources.

The TJC science center is located at 1411 E. Lake St. Tickets are $5 for children, seniors and students and $7 for adults. Day passes are also available which allow visitors to see all of that day’s shows plus the “Oceans: Acid vs. Life” exhibit. Parking is free.
Theater seating is limited, and it is recommended that tickets be purchased in advance at the front counter or online at sciencecenter.tjc.edu.
Educator Appreciation Day on Sept. 17
On Saturday, Sept. 17, the science center will hold Educator Appreciation Day, as a way of thanking local educators for their hard work in the community.
By showing their valid school ID, educators will receive free admission for themselves and one additional person, for one planetarium show plus entrance to the exhibit.
The Center for Earth & Space Science Education at TJC engages more than 30,000 visitors per year and is a one-of-a-kind teaching, learning and special-occasion space located in the heart of East Texas. Open to the public for dome shows, stargazing events, field trips and special events, the science center reflects TJC’s commitment to quality education, a vibrant student life and service through educational engagement with the community.
