Two outstanding high school students were awarded three $1,005 college scholarships in the Tyler Junior College “Future Apaches” scholarship event held Saturday, March 24, at TJC’s main campus.
Jessica Matlock of Jefferson High School was awarded two $1005 scholarships as a result of winning in two categories: The “Apache of the Week” scholarship, sponsored by TJC, and “Drill Teamer of the Week” scholarship, sponsored by Pharmacy Solutions. She plans to attend TJC this fall. The “Cheerleader of the Week” scholarship, sponsored by Texas Spine & Joint Hospital, was awarded to Sarah Puckett of Spring Hill High School.
TJC Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs Dr. Juan E. Mejia welcomed the crowd prior to the selection of the scholarship recipients. Visitors were treated to refreshments and giveaways as well as tours of the campus and residence halls.
“Congratulations to the overall scholarship recipients as well as all the weekly winners,” said Dr. Mejia. “The 39 students selected as Apache of the Week, Cheerleader of the Week and Drill Teamer of the Week are all very deserving, and we look forward to seeing many of them enroll in TJC this fall.”
Students, parents, high school leaders and friends joined officials from TJC, Texas Spine & Joint Hospital and Alpha Media Group at TJC’s main campus on Saturday as the names of weekly winners were entered into a drawing for an overall winner in each scholarship category.
During the 2017 football season, 39 students were nominated by leaders at their respective high schools for demonstrated excellence and tenacity. Harlen the Sports Guy and Pigskin Bob from the Friday Night Scoreboard radio show (KYKX 105.7 & 104.1 The Ranch) crashed high school pep rallies around the East Texas area announcing the names of the 39 students as weekly winners of the Apache of the Week, Cheerleader of the Week, or Drill Teamer of the Week.
“Pigskin Bob and I are so proud to award these students throughout the Friday night high school football arena these scholarships,” said Harlen The Sports Guy, Sports Director, Alpha Media East Texas. “From band students, to cheerleaders, drill teamers, student athletes, and future Tyler Junior College Apaches, our show and our great sponsors help make this possible. The “Cheerleader of the Week” announced today marks the 100th $1,005 college scholarship we have awarded since 2005,” he added.
