Tyler Junior College has announced Presidential Honors Scholars Ebony Griffin and Jairo Tec as the recipients of its annual Rotary Young Citizens.
Recipients are chosen by a vote of TJC faculty and staff.
They each received a $500 scholarship from the TJC President’s Circle fund.
The Rotary Young Citizens Award goes to two TJC sophomores each year, based on qualities including: dependability, service, honesty, courtesy, loyalty, leadership, sportsmanship and scholarship.
Ebony Griffin is a biology major from Rusk.
At TJC, she has been in the Presidential Honors Program, a member of Phi Theta Kappa, Sigma Kappa Delta and Sigma Delta Mu honor societies, and Apache Chiefs and Ambassadors, a group of student leaders who assist with new student orientation and provide campus tours.
She plans to transfer to The University of Texas at Tyler, where she will major in biology and minor in biochemistry. She hopes to be a pediatric gastroenterologist.
Jairo Tec is a general studies major from Henderson.
At TJC, he has been in the Presidential Honors Program and a member of Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society. He has been active on the TJC Green Committee focusing on pro-environment activities on campus and in the Hispanic Student Organization. He has also served as a tutor in the TJC Stem Center, assisting fellow students with math, algebra, calculus and chemistry.
He plans to transfer to UT Tyler and major in mechanical engineering.
