TJC kicks off new year with Student Involvement Fair

Tyler Junior College students had a chance to sample TJC’s student organizations -- and a lot of pizza -- during Wednesday’s Student Involvement Fair on the TJC main campus.

More than 35 booths filled the campus quad area with interests ranging from Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society and Tutoring Services to Las Mascaras drama club and the Wellness and Exercise program.

The fair is part of TJC’s Weeks of Welcome, a series of back-to-school events that offer new and returning students opportunities for fun and involvement.

“Studies have repeatedly shown that students who are engaged in activities outside the classroom are more likely to be more successful and stay in college,” said Lauren Tyler, TJC director of student life.

Jessica Hughes, a TJC sophomore general studies major from Van, said, “I’m involved with some of the ministries on campus, but I’m also planning to pursue a communications degree and eventually teach at the collegiate level, so I will definitely check out the journalism and communications-related clubs.”

The involvement fair not only offers students an opportunity to see what organizations and programs offer, it’s also a way for faculty and staff to interact with students they might not otherwise have a chance to meet.

Dental studies professor Christina Horton said, “These events are a great way for us to get out of our dental hygiene world in the Rogers Nursing & Health Sciences Center, hand out some free toothbrushes and other items, and let students know more about our programs.”

A popular event during the activities fair is when local pizza eateries put their best slice forward and students vote for the title of Best Pizza in Tyler.

“Pizza and college students just go hand in hand,” Tyler said, “so this is always a really popular event.”

Participating restaurants were: Cici’s, Mazzio’s Italian Eatery, Palio’s Pizza Café and Pizza Hut.

After the votes were tallied, the winner of this year’s contest was Pizza Hut.

TJC’s Weeks of Welcome events continue with a Movie on the Lawn on Thursday night, a pep rally, freshman class photo and TJC soccer games on Friday; and a football game on Saturday as the Apaches take on the Blinn Buccaneers. Kickoff is 7 p.m. at Christus Trinity Mother Frances Rose Stadium.
