The No. 1 spectator sport in the United States is broadcast in some 150 countries and claims over 175 million fans with $2 billion in annual purchasing power.
It’s brash, it’s loud, and it’s distinctly American. It’s NASCAR and, in the mind of playwright Janet Allard, it’s theatrical gold.
Allard and collaborator Michael Bigelow Dixon have created “Vrooommm! A NASComedy,” which comes to Theatre TJC this month.
Plot twist: The show features an all-female cast.
The production is under the direction of Jacob Davis, TJC theater professor.
Performances are 7:30 p.m. Wednesday-Saturday, April 24-27, with a 2:30 p.m. matinee on Saturday, April 27, in Jean Browne Theatre.
Admission is $10 for adults and $5 for seniors, students and active military.
Tickets are on sale in the Theatre TJC Box Office. Box office hours are 1-6 p.m. weekdays. For reservations, call 903-510-2212.
In this breezy comedy, the fast lane is stalled to a screeching halt by the arrival of a woman driver on the NASCAR scene, and egos get bruised as Holly “Legs” Nelson starts stealing the show by driving so fast some think she's cheating. Her rival, Hotshot, wants to sabotage her success, which results in a fast-paced story of NASCAR drivers and their kooky fans, all in pursuit of high-octane glory.
The cast includes: Chip/Randy/Joani – Hanna Odom of Winona; Leg/Flossie/Flash – Keirsten Culver of Forney; Sly/Richard/Mitchie/Chicken 2/Wendy – Maddie Grace Beam of Bullard; Rocky/Waitress/Inspector – Elizabeth Campbell of Whitehouse; Hotshot/Chicken 1/Cassie/Man in Hat/Nurse – Makenna Cook of Houston; Naked Fan/Grandma/Shadowy Figure/Richard Petty – Anna Hale of College Station.
