The Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board (THECB) has appointed Deborah Welch, TJC business department chair/professor, to the Texas Transfer Advisory Committee’s (TTAC) subcommittee on business.
In its first meeting held last week, Welch was elected committee co-chair. The group is composed of 40 faculty members from across the state, with equal representation from public community colleges and public universities as well as two TTAC members.
As part of this subcommittee, she will aid in the refinement of the Texas Transfer Field of Study Curriculum for Business. The concept of a field of study plan has existed since 1997; however, it must be monitored and modified to provide students with current skill sets in response to an evolving environment.
The role of the subcommittee is to ensure that students who attend one of Texas’ 50-plus community colleges not only receive the highest quality of education in the field of business, but also that students who wish to transfer to a four-year university do so with all of their business coursework transferring seamlessly.
“The collaboration of university and community college representatives revealed a shared concern for transparency of degree expectations for all students (native and transfer),” Welch said. “Stronger relations between the different institutions are developed during the process which provides a benefit to students and improves the transfer advising process.”
She continued, “A new aspect to the committee work is the shared accountability of the coordinating board, which has committed to maintaining a website with university degree pathways and required coursework for public access which will benefit transfer advising.”
Welch has previously served on statewide committees of this nature.
