On Saturday, more than 700 future Apaches and their families got a firsthand look at college life during Spring Preview Day on the Tyler Junior College central campus.
“We had standing room only for our welcome session in Wagstaff Gym,” said Britt Sabota, TJC registrar and director of records, reporting and analytics. “The weather was beautiful, so it was a great day for people to come out and see TJC for themselves and for future students to have an opportunity to picture themselves here and chart that next chapter in their educational journey.”
Naomi Moody, a senior at Tyler High School, came to learn more about TJC’s health sciences and Presidential Honors program.
“I’ve always enjoyed going to the doctor’s office,” Moody said. “I like all of that medical stuff. I shadowed at Christus [Trinity Mother Frances Hospital] over the summer, and I got to see how they operate in the ICU, the NICU and the OR. That made me want to solidify my career pathway in health.”
At the Presidential Honors program session on Saturday, Moody met with honors and scholarship staff as well as current and future honors students.

“I’m majoring in health sciences and kinesiology, but I asked a question in the session earlier about changing majors because one of the students here mentioned that they’re going to be a surgical tech, and I might want to know more about that,” she said. “I know that I want to be a pediatric surgeon, so I asked that question in case I decided I wanted to change my major.
“I think the Presidential Honors program is going to help me a lot; and with all of the other students in this program, I’m really looking forward to my next two years here.”
Naomi’s father, Rolando Moody, came to learn more about the College’s security aspects and the honors program’s coed Living and Learning Community in Ornelas Residential Complex.
“I wanted to get a feel for the authenticity of what is going on here. I need to know what I need to know,” he said in a fatherly tone. “I felt very comfortable with what they had to say and what the students had to say. There is a very diverse group of students in honors, and I’m very excited for her to come here. Even I want to go back to school now.”’

“TJC really is everything to everyone,” Sabota added. “Obviously, today is a lot about those high school juniors and seniors who are coming for that traditional college experience; but we also have students up to 65 and 70 years old. We also have a lot of military veterans, single moms and working adults.
“Anything you have going on in your life, it’s not too much to keep you from achieving your dreams. It is never too late to get started at TJC.”
